St. Patrick's Day By Averi Cobb

Saint Patrick's Day
By- Averi Cobb

Is Saint Patrick's Day really just a day to pinch people over the color green? Even thought pinching someone if they are not wearing green is fun but there is a lot more to the story. Saint Patrick is who the Irish holiday is focused on, but he was not even Irish. In the article "Saint Patrick's Day Fast Facts" it stated: ...born in Britain...at the age of sixteen he was brought to Ireland as a slave."  After six years he finally escaped. Later Saint Patrick returned to Ireland and became a priest. He wanted to Christianize the Irish people. He was successful, when he died on the 17th of March the Irish made it a holiday to commemorate him. One of the symbols of St. Patrick's Day is the shamrock, this clover like plant has 3 leafs and was a tool Saint Patrick used to help convert the Irish people. It symbolized the Holy Trinity and how they are 'united' like how the plant is united by one stem. Saint Patrick's Day has a lot more meaning than green and pinching.
